The basis of an educational system is the instructional activity which is an integrated set of media, equipment, methods, and personnel performing efficiently those functions required to accomplish one or more learning objectives. The critical functions for a complete instructional system are: practice of performance, practice of knowledge, presentation of knowledge, student management, and quality control. These functions may be performed by a variety of components, including people, machines, books, and different kinds of equipment, depending on the objectives. Other necessary systems are required for: record-keeping, feeding, supply, finance, transportation, and communication, depending whether the system is based on student attendances at physical, centralized school locations or whether some other educational system is involved such as distant learning, computer instruction, tutoring, and so on.
